Series 2 vs. HD
I'm sort of assuming I can't use my Series 2 with my HD satellite provider (Dish Network), so, first, correct me if I'm wrong, and second, is there a way to do so? Or should I just go ahead and get a Premiere? :)

You can if you use the S-video input from the Dish Network receiver.
Sadly there's not a direct HDMI input solution.

I think I can do that, I just want to make sure I'm not going to fry the Tivo if I do. :)

not quite sure what you mean 'can't use it'

you can still get signal, you just won't record in HD.

I used my Series2 with brighthouse with no problem. again, just recording in SD.

I guess I'm just pointing out that it isn't totally useless while you're saving up for the Premerie

I guess I was under the impression that the Series 2 wouldn't "down convert" an HD signal to a non-HD signal. I was afraid I'd fry out the TiVo's memory trying to get it to read HD signals when it wasn't designed to. Am I wrong? (Which would be nice?)

The Tivo HD boxes, including the Premiere aren't compatible with Satellite service like the S2 units were. The new Tivos require CableCard, which is a cable-only offering. They don't have the RCA style inputs that the Series 2 units had.
You mention that you had Dish, so I want to make sure you didn't get a Premiere and discover you can't use it.

Good heavens, then how are you supposed to use your TiVo if you have satellite?

You don't.

You either get the DirecTV enabled TiVo, or you don't use satellite TV.

Well that blows.

Fortunately I'm doing everything I can to get rid of satellite TV anyway (HATE it), but at the moment I'm stuck in someone else's house and don't have much choice. I guess in that respect then it's better I have a series 2 so I can actually use it; I was just afraid of a signal compatibility issue.

It's not a problem

As long as there are some SD outputs from the satellite box, your Series 2 is fine. I have a HD cable box hooked up to a Series 2 and everything works fine.

Good to know. Thank you!

Re: It's not a problem

I used my Series2 TiVo with a DISH Network HD receiver for quite a while, without incident. I used the S-Video connectors available on both, rather than the RCA video connectors, to get slightly better image quality. The TiVo isn't going to record in HD, but it will do just fine recording HD channels in SD, and the result is quite watchable. If you don't have an S-Video connector on your DISH Network box, the RCA signal will work, but be slightly lower quality.

Eventually, you'll want to get DirecTV and the new DirecTV TiVo model, or cable and a TiVo Premiere, but as long as you're stuck with DISH Network, your Series2 will be fine.

Re: It's not a problem

I will never, ever get DirecTV again, so as soon as I can, it's back to cable. :)

What they say. I just recently ditched Dish (after being a 14 year customer) and went to cable just so I could upgrade to a Premiere. I can give up Dish a hell of a lot easier than I can give up TiVo :)

I don't have a choice right now, but I'll do everything in my power never to use any satellite again, personally. Absolutely hated DirecTV.

The TiVo Premiere will do you no good at all with Dish, it only has coax input, no RCA or other input at all. It's not designed to switch channels on an external tuner at all.

Yup, that's what others have said as well. Thank you!
